Tales from The Big Canoe”, is Canoe FM’s Indigenous Program, with Anishinaabe host Larry O’Connor.
Larry is an Odawa Citizen of the Sheshegwaning First Nation on the North shore of Manitoulin Island with Métis and Irish roots.
Listen to “Tales From The Big Canoe” the last Wednesday of every month at 6 pm or the following Friday at 11 am, to hear our culture, traditions and music by Indigenous Artists, about services and programs for indigenous peoples, interesting stories, or events that impact the daily lives of Indigenous people across Turtle Island.
Larry enjoys incorporating music from a diverse selection of Indigenous artists into the program. The music styles range from Contemporary to the Blues and more. You might even get to hear some Métis fiddle music that will make you tap your toes and want to play the spoons!
Story Behind the Song, with host Jim Love
Jim Love is an author, musician, podcast host and an IT leader
This is a show that focuses on a songwriter and their life and works to date. It will explore their life, their
influences and how these are reflected in their songs. We’ll also talk about the craft of songwriting and how the
songs came about.
In The Afternoon – Lena Fontaine or Drew Allen
During this three hour program we keep you entertained with great music, we keep you informed about community events, breaking news and we report on lost pets at 12:35. Let’s have some fun.
There are two hosts who share this show:
Drew Allen: Drew began his music career at the age of four, drawing inspiration from his mother Peggy Allen who could play many classical, jazz and broadway tunes from memory. He went on to study at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and New York University. He performs everything from Beethoven to George Gershwin to Henry Mancini to Elton John to Coldplay. He has also worked at radio stations in Toronto and Calgary. On his bi-weekly radio show, he shares compelling anecdotes of the many musicians he has met, worked with or seen live in concert.

After Nine – Cathy Mcllmurray
Cathy Mac started at the station before Canoe FM even had CRTC approval to start broadcasting. Cathy’s show today remains true to its origins: Friends, Food and Family. She likes to chat with community people about their events including bake sales, the farmers markets, fundraisers, mental health awareness, family, youth and seniors happenings, and the occasional recipe.
She concludes all her shows by playing What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong.
