Canoe FM’s Mission Statement
Canoe FM is a not-for-profit, volunteer-driven community radio station, dedicated to serving the Haliburton Highlands by offering diverse, engaging programming and promoting local talent. We strive to advance the public’s knowledge, and appreciation of community radio by providing educational sessions, and volunteer opportunities in Haliburton County. Canoe FM will remain a strong partner in the community we serve.
Our Programming
It is designed for full time, part-time and seasonal residents of Haliburton County. Our CRTC mandate requires we have content that spans a vast majority of the music genres balancing music with talk and information exchange while at the same time providing a stage for Canadian artists and their music. We have it all and that’s what makes us unique!
Our Organization
We are staffed by over 120 volunteers and 4 paid staff positions, 2 full time and 2 part time. We are managed by a volunteer board of directors that are elected by volunteers at our Annual General Meeting. Our board meets the 4th Thursday of each month. For information contact our Station Manager at 705-457-1009.
A Salute to the Founders
In 2001 Don Cameron, Dave Sovereign and Jack Hewitt met to discuss the idea of creating a community radio station.
The first meeting of the proposed radio station was held on March 20, 2001. During this meeting the discussion was around incorporation, the vision, fundraising and an engineering study.
The committee approached the community and business and families raised the $100,000 needed to get the radio station started. Members of Haliburton County have created a unique station unlike any other.
The first unofficial broadcast was July 8th, 2003 and the Grand Opening of the station was September 6th, 2003.
The radio station was incorporated on July 18, 2001.
The first song broadcast over the airwaves was The Impossible Dream.
