Opening Reception for "M(y)otherwork" by Corynn Kokolakis

We are thrilled to announce the opening reception of "M(y)otherwork," a compelling  exhibition by the talented figurative painter Corynn Kokolakis. Join us on Saturday, July 6, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM for to meet the artist and gain insight into her creative process. Corynn will also give an artist talk at 2:30 PM, offering a deeper understanding of her works and the themes that inspire them.

"M(y)otherwork" is a series of paintings that seek to show the maintenance and emotional labor involved in mothering.   Kokolakis' skilled compositions and vigorous brushwork deftly place the viewer in the Mama Bear's chair, and it's looking down from that vantage point that the nuances of caregiving and identity, are revealed, as if through a mother's gaze.

Corynn's connection to the Haliburton Highlands runs deep, having formed lasting memories through cottaging, paddling, and camping in the area over the years. We are delighted to welcome her back to the community where her journey as an artist began, first as an exhibitor at the Haliburton Art and Craft Festival.

Having recently completed her Master's Degree in Fine Arts at the Ontario College of Art University last year, Corynn is just back from a three-week residency in the United States, further honing her craft and vision. Be among the first to glimpse her newest work!

Press Release – HHACF Acquires Land in Dysart

Acquires Land in Dysart et al Township

On Tuesday, June 25th, 2024, Dysart et al council voted unanimously to
give the Haliburton Highlands Arts Centre Foundation 14.5 acres of
land, located at the intersection of Wonderland Road and County Road
21, for the purpose of building a world-class Performing Arts Centre.
Foundation president, Dan Manley, who was present at the council
meeting, said “We are thrilled to accept this generous contribution of land to our vision of bringing a
Performing Arts Centre to Haliburton County. This represents a major step forward for our Foundation,
and it will kick off the important work of beginning to raise funding and awareness from the federal and
provincial government, private foundations, corporate partners, and individual donors.”.
The Haliburton Highlands Arts Centre Foundation is a non-profit group which was founded by Dan
Manley and Wil Andrea, and its purpose is to build a world-class Performing Arts Centre in Haliburton
County.
Over the past six (6) years, the foundation has been incorporated, and its board of directors has
expanded to include nine (9) members of the local arts and business community, who have been
working tirelessly to make this vision into a reality.
Janis A. Barlow & Associates conducted a Project Feasibility Study. It was released in September 2022,
and revealed to the public at the AGM in October 2022.
Following the release of the Barlow Report, The Dennis Group was hired to conduct a Fundraising
Feasibility Study,, and the HHACF Board will be planning the next steps of the campaign in consultation
with the Dennis Group, who recently raised $45 Million for the Canadian Canoe Museum in
Peterborough, as well as architects, engineers, environmental consultants, designers, acoustic
engineers, and general contractors.
The Haliburton Highlands Arts Centre Foundation wishes to thank Mayor Murray Fearrey, the entire
council of Dysart et al, and their staff, for their foresight, generosity and support in making this historic
donation!

HKPR – Heat Alert has ended for the County of Haliburton

Heat Warning Alert Ended for the County of Haliburton,
City of Kawartha Lakes and Northumberland County

PORT HOPE (June 21, 2024) — The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (HKPR) District Health Unit is advising that the
Heat Warning Alert issued on June 17, 2024 and the Extended Heat Warning Alert issued on June 19, 2024 for the
County of Haliburton, City of Kawartha Lakes and Northumberland County has ended effective today as a result of
Environment Canada forecasting conditions that no longer meet heat warning criteria.
While the extreme heat warning has ended, the HKPR District Health Unit would like to remind people to continue
taking precautions in hot weather to avoid heat-related illness. This includes drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated,
keeping indoor spaces cool, avoiding direct sunlight and long periods in the heat whenever possible, and checking in
on your friends, neighbours and family members to ensure they are staying cool and hydrated.
Extreme heat can be dangerous. Knowing how to prepare for the next heat warning can help you stay safe and

Take a step back in time with Dorset Heritage Day at the Dorset Heritage Museum (1040 Main Street) on Saturday, June 29. Outdoor exhibits will include steam-powered machinery, antique automobiles and tractors, as well as a visit from the 35th Battalion. Guests can also tour the many fascinating exhibits inside the building.
A unique marketplace will feature everything from woodworking pieces to vinyl records to maple syrup to art and jewelry. Children's activities and crafts will keep the kids amused, and there will be face-painting and a photo booth, as well as a quilt and afghan raffle. The Dorset Lions Club will be on site offering a barbecued lunch.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will take place rain or shine. Admission is free, but donations to the museum are always welcome.

$500,000 Match Announced for Gifts to HHHSF Campaign

Generous gift brings campaign for CT and state-of-the-art mammography closer to the
Haliburton Highlands

The Haliburton Highlands Health Services Foundation (HHHS Foundation) Here for You in
the Highlands campaign has received a significant boost thanks to a generous gift and
pledge from long-time supporters Scott and Chere Campbell, who have made a
substantial initial donation of $500,000 and have committed to matching community
donations up to $500,000.
Scott Campbell stated, "This campaign is very important to improve health services locally
for full and part-time residents, so we wanted to support the campaign with a significant
gift personally. Our experience is that when people know their gift will be doubled with a
match, it really encourages people to give. We also wanted to work with the Foundation to
make this matching opportunity available.”
The HHHS Foundation is raising funds to bring CT Scan and advanced Mammography
equipment to the County along with other tools such as a new ultrasound unit and
upgrading the Picture Archiving Communications System (PACS). This equipment will
significantly improve the quality and speed of access to diagnostic imaging services
locally. It is an important step forward in building a modern complement of healthcare
services in the County that are Here for You when you need them.
“This is a real milestone for the Foundation.” said David Blodgett, Chair of the HHHS
Foundation, “When the matching portion is achieved, this will be the largest gift by
individuals ever received by the Foundation. We are very grateful for the generosity and
leadership of Scott and Chere Campbell.”

"As I engage with individuals throughout the County, there is an overwhelming desire for
better access to health services locally," stated HHHS CEO Veronica Nelson. "We are
profoundly grateful for the generous support from Scott and Chere Campbell. We also

need your support and appreciate every contribution to the enhancement of wellness and
care at HHHS."
With the gift from the Campbells, the HHHS Foundation has reached 78% percent of the
$4.3-million goal. The HHHS Foundation will continue the Here for You campaign to raise
funds for additional technologies that are badly needed, such as a new x-ray suite, to be
able to respond to the evolving needs of the community.
While the Ontario Ministry of Health provides operating funds to HHHS, it counts on
communities to raise the capital funds for new equipment.
“We are asking everyone across the County – full-time residents, part-time residents,
cottagers, businesses, visitors – to open their hearts as the Campbells have done to
contribute now,” said Tayce Wakefield, lead volunteer for the Here for You Campaign. “If
we all give at the level that we can, we will raise the funds the HHHS team needs to
enhance care for us all.”
