About the Show
Lorne has been a lifelong collector of vintage music. He has appeared on CBC Radio, CHFI’s Saturday Night Oldies with Don Daynard, and hosted shows on community radio stations in Toronto including: CIUT and CKLN. While in Toronto, he ran Canada’s largest record collectors get-together and had his own store, the Bluenote Record Shop.
While driving through the Haliburton area, Lorne found Canoe FM. Impressed with “the different mix of music” he thought “maybe they’ll let me play my weird mix of music.” In 2019, Lorne began hosting the show Back Beat. The show is now heard on various community radio stations across North America. In June, 2023 Back Beat received the prestigious “Best Music Variety” show award from the National Campus and Community Radio Association.
Back Beat is a fun romp through the history of popular music, an eclectic mix of vintage blues, jazz, country, gospel, pop and rock ‘n’ roll from Lorne’s extensive collection. The show goes beyond the hits, placing an emphasis on underrated and forgotten artists and records. Back Beat also features new artists with a vintage sound.
