Ctrl-ART-Del Theatre Company Runs Fall Acting Course for both Teens and Adults
The course is running for three weekends in Haliburton, ending with a public performance of scenes and the company’s 2024 season announcement.
SEPTEMBER 15, 2023 - Ctrl-ART-Del is offering a three-weekend-long Scene Study course this fall, and is including teens as well as adult performers.
“When we started Ctrl-ART-Del, our original intention was to program for young and working age adults who had aged out of school programs,” said Amy Leis, Ctrl-ART-Del’s production manager. “Last year I volunteered to help with the Drama Club at Haliburton Highlands Secondary School. I met many, very talented kids that are hungry for more theatre than they can get at school alone. They kept asking me if they could get involved with Ctrl-ART-Del. Who am I to say no to that?
The whole point was always to get young people into the theatre. So, to better serve our community, we’ve decided to expand our focus. We are welcoming both teens and adults into our programs this year. We’re really excited about it.”
To help prepare teens to perform in mainstage productions with the company, artistic director Tim Nicholson wanted to start out with some solid basic training. That’s why Ctrl-ART-Del is running a three-weekend long scene study course this fall.
“What a lot of people don’t realize is that acting is a skilled trade,” said Nicholson. “Raw talent exists, but there are also technical skills that can and should be taught. Once you have those technical skills in your mental toolbox, you can apply them to any role you take on.”
The upcoming Scene Study will break down these techniques, all through hands-on work. Students will get a taste of working as an ensemble, be cast in a scene from a contemporary play, get individual rehearsal time with a professional director and finish off by performing their scene for an audience at the end of the course.
“The course is ideal both for people who have never been onstage before but want to learn some of these technical skills, and for people who have been onstage in school or community theatre and want an idea of the skills needed to thrive in a post secondary theatre program or a professional rehearsal room,” said Nicholson. “It’s open to anyone age 14 and up.”
The course runs for two weekends at the Minden Lions Hall: September 23 & 24 and September 30 & October 1, from 10 AM – 4 PM. October 14 is a rehearsal day at the Lions Hall, with individual scenes called for an hour each between 9 AM and 6 PM. October 15 will be a full cast rehearsal day at the Haliburton Legion from 10 AM – 4 PM. A public performance of scenes will take place at 4 PM at the Haliburton Legion. All are welcome to attend the presentation.
Following the October 15th performance, Ctrl-ART-Del will announce their 2024 Season of plays.
“No spoilers – you’ll have to come to the Scene Study Performance to be the first to hear what we’re up to this year,” Leis said. “I will say in advance that all the pieces we’re doing have roles for both teens and adults. We’re also doing open auditions. Our big focus this season is on getting fresh blood onto the stage. If you’ve always wanted to be onstage in Haliburton, we want to meet you. The more new people, the better.”

Waste/Materials at Waste Disposal Sites

Subject: Inspection of Incoming Waste/Materials at Waste Disposal Sites
Residents are advised that in accordance with legislation and regulations, the Township of Minden Hills requires that all incoming waste and materials be inspected prior to entering any Waste Disposal Site. Site Attendants are then able to direct residents to the appropriate waste areas for proper disposal.
The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) regulates all disposal of waste in the Province of Ontario. Each waste disposal site, landfill, compost facility, etc. is governed by the Environmental Protection Act. Under this Act, the Township must apply and be granted an Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) to operate a Waste Disposal Site.
The Township’s ECA states:
“The Owner shall develop and implement a program to inspect waste to ensure that the waste received at the Site is of a type approved for acceptance under this Approval.”
To prevent prohibited materials coming into our Waste Disposal Sites that would violate the ECA or pose a health and safety risk, our policies protect the Township, residents, and staff by requiring Site Attendants to inspect the materials (waste, recyclables, etc.) in each clear garbage bag or load every time a vehicle enters the site.

The Township of Minden Hills is advising residents of an upcoming culvert replacement on Conestoga Road.
Conestoga Road will be closed between County Road 21 and Loucks Lane. Residents should access County Road 21 by way of Conestoga Road and Kashagawigamog Lake Road.
Work will begin on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at 6:30 AM and should be complete in one day.
Celebration of Life for Patrick Monaghan
Ag 64 left this earth July 26, 2023, after a warrior battle with cancer. Pat was born in Grimsby, Ontario in 1959 to Beverley and Peter Monaghan. Pat is survived by his mother Beverley (Charles Boudreau), brothers Michael Shawn, Norman Daniel (Christine) and sister Kelly Quail (Edwin). Also nieces Tamara Monaghan, Leighla Quail, nephews Thomas Monaghan, James Quail. Pat was loved by Aunts and Uncles and many cousins; best friends Mary and Derrick Squires and Louise and Glen Moore, Pat's last words were his love for Christine McKenney, and family and friends are grateful for her loving care. His passion was family, friends, animals, Classic vehicles, and especially the Blues Music. Pat was well known for his Buckslide Dog treats and his Buckslide Blues Cruise radio show at Canoe FM reaching an audience across Canada and the United States. Pat won 3 NCRA awards for his radio show and award from Toronto Maple Blues Society for promoting the Blues music. In Memphis, TN a brick with his name has been added to the Walk of Fame. Pat will be missed by his family and many friends.
A private service will be held for immediate family at St. Stephens's Cemetery.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Haliburton Legion on September 23rd - 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
And Kitchener Polish Legion on October 15th - 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
There will be an open mike for those who wish to speak.
Donations can be made to the Highlands Buckslide Blues Society in lieu of flowers.

Huntsville OPP looking to speak to a Good Samaritin.
HUNTSVILLE OPP LOOKING TO SPEAK TO GOOD SAMARITIN BOATER
(HUNTSVILLE, ON) - Huntsville Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are looking to speak to a boater who assisted in rescuing two persons from the water after their canoe capsized.
On September 9th, 2023, at approximately 8:25 p.m., the Huntsville Detachment of the OPP received a call for two parties who had capsized their canoe and needed assistance. An unknown boater is believed to have rescued the two parties and returned them to shore on the river between Fairy Lake and Lake Vernon.
Huntsville OPP are asking that the unknown boater please contact investigators at 1(888)310-1122.
