PRESS RELEASE
Announcing The Great Haliburton Plant Pot Drive!
May 24, 2024
Two local native plant enthusiasts have teamed up to solve a problem: what to do with used plant
pots.
Simon Payn, of Haliburton-based natural landscaping company, Grounded, and Baz Conlin, of
native plant growers, Haliburton Micromeadows, have joined forces for The Great Haliburton Plant
Pot Drive.
They'll be collecting plastic pots and re-using them to grow native plants.
Payn says: "One of the great embarrassments of our industry is the amount of plastic we use. We're
creating gardens that are good for the environment, but at the same time we're using a lot of
plastic. We want to fix that."
Conlin says: "This is a win-win. It's good for the environment because it keeps plastics out of the
waste stream and it allows growers to provide native plants at a lower cost."
Used plant pots can be dropped off behind Lucas House, 123 Maple. Ave, in Haliburton. There's a
place set up next to the green "cage" in the parking lot.
Payn and Conlin are looking for pots that are in good shape. The most useable kind are the
common 4-inch ones that most people buy plants in.
Payn says: "Let's see how many pots our community can collect. It's a great challenge as the
gardening season gets going."
