Media Release: December 30, 2024 - Notice of Wastewater Treatment Plant Tertiary Bypass

SUBJECT: Notice of Wastewater Treatment Plant Tertiary Bypass

Please be advised that due to high flows caused by rain, the Minden Wastewater Treatment Plant began a tertiary sand filter bypass at approximately 6:25pm on Sunday December 29, 2024. All wastewater treated at the plant is still receiving primary and secondary treatment and disinfection prior to discharge. Sand filtering will resume as soon as possible.

Ontario Clean Water Agency will notify the local health authorities and will be completing sampling as per the Environmental Compliance Approval.

Residents are reminded that any water taken from a surface water source (such as a lake or river) must always be adequately treated to remove pathogens prior to using as a potable water source.

Updates regarding this bypass event will be posted on the Township website.

2024 Holiday Schedule for Township of Minden Hills

Please find the Township of Minden Hills Schedule for Administrative Offices and Facilities during the 2024

Holiday Season:

  • Municipal Office (7 Milne St.) and Public Works Office are open until 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 24 then will close for the holiday season reopening on Thursday, January 2, 2025 at 8:30 a.m.
  • Fire Department Administrative Office (12418 Hwy. 35) the administrative office will be closed Wednesday, December 25 to January 1, 2025.
  • Minden Hills Cultural Centre / Agnes Jamieson Gallery (176 Bobcaygeon Rd.) will be closed from December 24 to January 1, 2025.
  • Waste Disposal Sites: will operate regular winter hours; please note the exceptions on Wednesday, December 25 and Wednesday, January 1 all sites will be closed.
  • SG Nesbitt Memorial Arena (55 Parkside St.) will be open on Tuesday, December 24 from 8 to 11 a.m. and Tuesday, December 31, 2024 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Facility will be closed on December 25, 26 and January 1, 2025.

Regular operating hours resume on Thursday, January 2, 2025.

*Please note our Emergency Services will respond as needed. Also, the Township Public Works team (snowplow) will operate as needed.

Your input is needed as we gather valuable feedback about Minden Hills from the community throughout December and January. We are looking for input from everyone in order to develop a Community Priority/Strategic Plan for the future.
The Township of Minden Hills is working with Arising Collective to conduct this Community Engagement Program.
We are looking to:
•Clarify what people in our community care about most
•Determine Minden Hills’ assets and attributes
•Appreciate who we are today and what Minden Hills could be noted for in 5, 10years.
Share your thoughts! There are many ways to do this:
•Online Survey – open until February 2, 2025 at 4:30 p.m. – link to survey
•Focus Group Sessions with businesses, organizations, groups in the community(invitations will be sent to these groups)

Notice of Special Council Meetings - January 14 and 16, 2025

 

The Corporation of the Township of Minden Hills is preparing its 2025 Municipal Budget.

Council commenced its overview of the Draft Budget at the November 21, 2024, Special Meeting.

Council will continue to consider the budget at several upcoming special meetings to take place in Council Chambers (7 Milne St) at 9:00 a.m. unless otherwise specified.

  • Tuesday, January 14, 2025: Operating and Capital Budget review for the Fire Department; Public Works Department; Water and Wastewater; and Administration.
  • Thursday, January 16, 2025: Operating and Capital Budget review for the Community Services Department; Planning Department and Building Department.
  • Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Adopt and Finalize the 2025 Budget.

The Adoption of the Water and Wastewater rates will be considered at the January 14, 2025, meeting.

Please note that dates are subject to change and are dependent on deliberation and direction.

Supported material including the Budget Book will be provided on the agenda(s) located on the CivicWeb portal. Members of the Public are invited to observe Council proceedings by attending in-person or via the live-stream link.

SNOW SQUALLS EXPECTED FOR HALIBURTON COUNTY

 

(HALIBURTON COUNTY, ON) - The Haliburton Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is advising residents and travelers that a significant weather event is approaching the area.

Snow squalls are expected to begin late this afternoon, continue overnight and into Friday morning bringing hazardous conditions to the region. Snowfall amounts may reach up to 15 to 30 cm in Haliburton County.

The Haliburton OPP is warning that the combination of significant snowfall and blowing snow will lead to reduced visibility and slippery road conditions. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and stay informed of weather warnings.

Travel plans should be adjusted to account for these conditions.  Allow extra time for travel and check road conditions before heading out.

More Snow Expected in the Huntsville Area

SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL ON THE WAY FOR HUNTSVILLE AND LAKE OF BAYS

 

OPP Warning To Avoid Non-Essential Travel

 

(HUNTSVILLE, ON) - Huntsville is reporting light to moderate snow fall continuing with approximately 2-3 inches of snow since the early part of today. Accumulation is not exceeding snow removal efforts. Hwy 11 is moving at normal speeds and no MVC's have been reported in the area at this time.

The OPP want to remind motorists that despite the current snow clearing efforts, the weather and road conditions are continuing to deteriorate.  As the evening and overnight approach, road conditions are likely to change with falling temperatures.

In the Bracebridge Detachment area, Houseys Rapids Road, Uffington Road, Southwood Road, Beiers Road, and the northbound ramp at Luigi Road remain closed.

There are no road closures in the Huntsville Detachment area at this time, but please be alert as road conditions can change quickly. Plan your trip before leaving by visiting the MTO website for road conditions and closures at 511on.ca.

The OPP is urging the public to avoid non-essential travel during this time. Additional vehicles on the roads put occupants at risk and add additional challenges for snow removal.

If you are travelling, all your attention should be on your driving and the surrounding conditions. Avoid making any sudden braking or accelerating maneuvers as it could cause a loss of control of your vehicle.
